Advantages of Training

Training helps to teach a dog to understand words from the human language. Dogs need to learn what is expected from them, otherwise they will continue the undesirable behavior leading to an unwanted cycle of frustration. Training allows your dog to become more confident and comfortable in everyday situations.

Exposing your dog to positive training methods allows them to be social, obedient and builds a bond between owner and dog. Training prevents behavioral problems and will teach bite inhibition. It creates a better environment for the dog and its owner to understand each other better.

One of the best methods to use is the lure and reward technique, consisting of four steps, and children can use these same techniques:

• request • lure • response • reward

It is a gentle training method which is fun for both the owner and dog, and the dog learns faster and remembers longer. Remember to have patience and to make sure that the dog has been taught the desirable behaviour. If you don't like what your dog is doing, tell them to do something else.

Tricky Treat Ball

The Tricky Treat ball is a wonderful toy for all dogs. You take their regular kibble (the amount you would feed them for breakfast or dinner) and place it in their Tricky Treat ball. You can add a few extra treats in the ball if you would like to make it even more motivating to get their dinner. Then place it on the floor. It is best if you just leave the Tricky Treat ball there and not roll it so that they don’t learn to wait for someone to roll it for them. That is the whole fun to watch them figure it out! So instead of feeding your dog their food in a bowl try one of these balls to challenge your dog mentally and watch them work for their food to mentally tire them out.

A Poem

Do I Go Home Today? My family brought me home, cradled in their arms, they cuddled me and smiled at me, and said I was full of charm.

The children loved to feed me, they gave me special treats...
